Diagnosis

Headaches are very common and most of the time they do not require medical intervention. A headache may go away on its own or through self-care such as some relaxation, a good sleep, or perhaps an over-the-counter pain medication. There are cases in which a headache can signal a more serious condition.

If your headaches are frequent or severe, or if your headaches follow a new pattern, you may want to visit your doctor to find out the underlying cause. In this sort of situation, your doctor might need to make an examination that could include an MRI or a CT scan.

Tests such as a CT (or CAT) scan or an MRI can be intimidating and frightening. Learn more about these diagnostic tests so you know what to expect.
